Bio: Mary Lawlor is an Irish human rights advocate and expert on the protection of human rights defenders. She currently serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders. In 2001, she founded Front Line Defenders, an international organization focused on protecting at-risk human rights defenders, and served as its Executive Director until 2016. Previously, she led Amnesty International Ireland, where she was Director from 1988 to 2000, having earlier served as Board Chair. She is an Adjunct Professor of Business and Human Rights at Trinity College Dublin and serves on advisory boards at both Trinity and University College Dublin. She holds degrees in philosophy, Montessori teaching, and personnel management.

The mandate of the Special Rapporteur was established to ensure their protection and to raise awareness of the challenges they face. The Special Rapporteur monitors the situation of defenders worldwide, engages with states and civil society, and reports on threats, reprisals, and legal restrictions.
