Bio: Margaret Satterthwaite is an international human rights lawyer and scholar with decades of experience in access to justice, legal empowerment, and international litigation. She currently serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers. A Professor of Clinical Law at NYU School of Law, she directs the Global Justice Clinic and co-leads the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice. Her work spans regions including the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East, and she has appeared before international and regional human rights bodies. She has advised the UN, WHO, and World Bank, and previously co-founded Amnesty International USA’s LGBTQ+ rights program. Satterthwaite holds degrees from NYU and has clerked at both U.S. federal courts and the International Court of Justice.

The mandate of the Special Rapporteur was established to monitor and promote the independence and integrity of judicial systems worldwide. It addresses threats, political interference, and systemic challenges affecting legal professionals and the administration of justice. Through country visits, public reporting, and engagement with stakeholders, the mandate works to safeguard fair trial guarantees and support effective, impartial justice systems grounded in international human rights law.
