She currently serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. She co-founded and led the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy (REDLAD) for nearly a decade, also serving as Secretariat for the Civil Society Pillar of the Community of Democracies. Romero has contributed to hundreds of human rights reports and alerts, coordinated regional input to UN and Inter-American mechanisms, and consulted on issues including anti-corruption, access to information, and youth participation. She has been a guest professor at Columbia and Externado universities, and holds degrees from Externado University and IHEAL (Sorbonne Nouvelle \u2013 Paris 3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>About the mandate:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association are essential pillars of democratic society. These rights enable individuals to gather, organize, and collectively express their views, advocate for change, and participate in public life. The mandate of the Special Rapporteur was created by the Human Rights Council to promote and protect these freedoms\u2014both offline and online\u2014in accordance with international human rights law.
